Mama Berta Speaks

Mama Berta – Maria Austra Bertha Flores – is the mother of Berta Cáceres, the Lenca land and rights defender and anti-coup regime activist who was assassinated March 2, 2016, by a well financed and coordinated hit squad.

Mama Berta lives in La Esperanza, Intibuca. A lifelong nurse and midwife, she is a former Mayor of La Esperanza and a former Member of Congress.

She spoke with Grahame Russell (Rights Action) in her home, soon after the election of President Xiomara Castro that spelled the end of 12 years and 7 months of U.S. and Canadian backed military, drug-trafficking regimes in Honduras.
